Bhutan’s pristine rivers, renowned for offering some of the world's best white-water rafting experiences, are now at the heart of a new initiative aimed at enhancing both ecotourism and conservation. Through the UNDP’s Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN), eight internationally certified river rafting instructors have been trained to help grow the ecotourism sector. These certified instructors will, in turn, train new rafting guides across the country, contributing to the expansion of nature-based tourism.
Ecotourism is a critical component of BIOFIN Bhutan’s strategy, with the potential to generate an additional US$108 million annually and create 1,400 new jobs. The initiative supports community-run businesses and fosters public-private partnerships, driving sustainable development in Bhutan.
Beyond guiding adventure-seeking tourists, the rafting instructors will serve as protectors of Bhutan's river ecosystems. Their responsibilities will include improving waste management, preventing illegal fishing, and safeguarding endangered species like the white-bellied heron.
Karma Tenzin, Chief Forestry Officer from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, highlights the initiative's broader benefits: “With the rafting initiative, we create a synergistic environment where rafters help us conserve the water ecosystem. Our foresters have also been trained, focusing on patrolling rivers, which benefits both conservation efforts and the tourism industry.”
Damcho Rinzin from the Department of Tourism adds, "We now have eight internationally certified river guides who will bring immense benefits to Bhutan’s adventure tourism while ensuring sustainable use of our beautiful rivers."
This initiative marks a significant step forward for both ecotourism and conservation, ensuring that Bhutan’s rivers remain protected while promoting sustainable adventure tourism for future generations.
