Hon Yen Island is a popular tourist destination in Vietnam, known for its majestic landscapes and vibrant coral reefs that serve as a haven for marine species. Protecting these coral reefs is essential, as they form the foundation of the island’s biodiversity and support the livelihoods of the local community.
UNDP’s Biodiversity Initiative has partnered with the local cooperative in Hon Yen to enhance ecotourism by launching seven community-based ecotourism tours. These tours offer tourists a unique glimpse into the local culture and traditions, featuring age-old crafts and practices such as net weaving, fish sauce making, and cherry nurseries.
By participating in these tours, visitors help sustain traditional practices and support the artisans who keep them alive. This initiative not only boosts local livelihoods but also provides funding for the protection of Hon Yen’s ecosystem, including coral reefs - 15% of the revenue goes toward coral reef protection and community-led patrolling.
