BIOFIN will participate to the CBD COP 13 and will hold two different side events.
Several countries and the Global BIOFIN team will highlight the lessons learned of applying and adapting the BIOFIN methodology during a side event on 5th of December. In addition, the BIOFIN Mexico national team will have a side event on 7th of December to show case the different results they achieved with the BIOFIN methodology.
BIOFIN was initiated in response to the urgent global need to divert more finance from all possible sources towards global and national biodiversity goals, ashighlighted during the 2010 Biodiversity COP (10) in Nagoya. By the next COP (11) in 2012, UNDP launched ‘TheBiodiversity Finance Initiative’ commonly known as BIOFIN. Throughout 2013-4, the core global BIOFIN team and the first national BIOFIN teams were established, and have since further evolved to address the present needs.
Representatives from at least 4 BIOFIN countries will showcase the results from the BIOFIN process in their country, and how it has contributed to achieving finance results for biodiversity conservation.
Launch of the 2016 BIOFIN Workbook
The CBD COP13 will also be an opportunity for BIOFIN to release the new BIOFIN Workbook 2016 which includes all the improvement and lessons learnt from the countries to reach a more efficient and result based methodology. A first version of this methodology, summarised in the BIOFIN workbook, was drafted in 2013 and put to usein 2014. Early 2015, the global BIOFIN team stepped up its efforts to analyse gaps, lessons learned and best practises in the application of the methodology through a series of regional workshops. Building on a wealth of lessons learnt, a new generation of guidance materials is being developed, targeting the release of a published version before December 2016.
The BIOFIN methodology helps countries to set out a national process to build inter-ministerial partnerships, engage with the private sector, generate baseline data and policy recommendations on existing finance levels and future needs, developing and implementing finance plans and solutions to address national finance needs. BIOFIN recognises 4 types of finance results countries can pursue: (1) Delivering better, (2) Preventing future costs, (3) Mobilising Resources, and (4) Re-aligning Resources.
Participants of the CBD COP13 are welcome to participate to our two side events.
