The National Network of Phytogenetic Resources recognises the role of BIOFIN - Cuba

Miembros del grupo coordinador de la iniciativa BIOFIN- Cuba reconocieron la relevancia de apoyar la conservación de los recursos fitogenéticos para la alimentación y la agricultura en consonancia con la Meta 13 del Programa Nacional para la Diversidad Biológica (PNDB), la cual aboga por mantener y salvaguardar la diversidad genética de las especies autóctonas y las de valor socioeconómico.

   En un taller realizado en marzo último en el Instituto de Investigaciones Fundamentales en Agricultura Tropical “Alejandro de Humboldt”, representantes de BIOFIN expusieron los propósitos de la referida metodología encaminada a buscar soluciones para el financiamiento de la biodiversidad.

   Ello apuntalaría las acciones contenidas en la citada Meta 13, en especial lo referido a la conservación de la diversidad genética de especies útiles para la alimentación y la agricultura, con énfasis en las cultivadas, y en la preservación del conocimiento tradicional y local.

    De igual modo, las expertas asistentes al cónclave reafirmaron la interrelación de BIOFIN con el cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible, así como con la Tarea Vida y su acción estratégica 3, orientada  a adaptar las actividades agropecuarias, en particular las de mayor incidencia en la seguridad alimentaria del país, y  a los cambios en el uso de la tierra como consecuencia de la elevación del nivel del mar y la sequía.

The National Network of Phytogenetic Resources recognises the role of BIOFIN- Cuba in achieving common objectives

Members of the coordinating group of the BIOFIN-Cuba initiative recognized the importance of supporting the conservation of phytogenetic resources for food and agriculture in harmony with Goal 13 of the National Program for Biological Diversity (PNDB), which advocates for maintaining and safeguarding the genetic diversity of the native species and those of socio-economic value.

   In a workshop held in March at the Institute of Fundamental Research in Tropical Agriculture "Alejandro de Humboldt", representatives of BIOFIN presented the methodology aimed at finding solutions for the financing of biodiversity.

   This would support the actions needed to achieve the PNDB-Goal 13, particularly the conservation of genetic diversity of species useful for food and agriculture, with an emphasis on cultivated species, and on the preservation of traditional and local knowledge.

    The experts attending the meeting reaffirmed the importance and relevance of BIOFIN and biodiversity finance more generally in achieving Sustainable Development Goals. It is also important in Cuba's ambitions to tackle climate change through the Tarea Vida (Life Task) program and its strategic action 3, aimed at adapting agricultural activities, particularly those with the greatest impact on the country's food security, and changes in land use as a result of sea level rise and drought.
